Zardari puts his cards on the table
This Daily Times editorial states that Nawaz Sharif’s position is unclear since he has refused to tolerate any conspiracy against the PPP but is also offering cooperation to the lawyers’ movement which is planning a “long march” in Punjab in response to the government’s final refusal to restore the pre-emergency judiciary. The article is generally skeptical of Sharif’s obvious interest in running for office in a mid-term election and calls into question whether the federal government would allow such elections to take place. It is significant that the Daily Times is owned by Salman Taseer whose appointment yesterday as the new governor of Punjab was strongly condemned by the PML-N leadership.
